Join In Local Sport Weekend
LBTC successfully hosted a number of tennis events on 18th & 19th August as part of the national ‘Join in Local Sport’ weekend with sessions for all ages and abilities and an emphasis on having fun. The weekend began with a great turnout by the town’s youngsters as they filled all four courts on Saturday morning at the Junior Drop-In session. The ever popular adult Rusty Racquets group for Improvers was as busy as ever in the afternoon.
On the Sunday, tots and older children were introduced to fun games aimed at improving hand/eye co-ordination, balance and confidence. As the temperature soared to over 30°C chairman Simon Williams led the way in the adult Cardio Tennis session, a high-energy workout to music designed to keep the heart rate in an optimum zone for fat burning and fitness. After running around over mini-hurdles and stepping through ladders the glowing red faces were the result of more than just the sun!
With the court temperature eventually subsiding, things started to heat up off court as the BBQ got underway and the clubhouse veranda was transformed into an al fresco area where members mingled with newcomers for a well-deserved rest in the sunshine, looking out over the courts where some of the more energetic players were still enjoying the free use of the courts.
Join in Local Sport is a national celebration of local sport which is aimed at increasing participation in sport following the Olympics and the intention of the ‘Join In Weekend’ on the first weekend between the Olympic and Paralympic Games was to capture that enthusiasm and bring it back to the place it begins for all great champions – their local sports facilities. As part of the Olympic Legacy, Join In weekends may become annual national events.
Big thanks to all those involved in making the weekend’s events a success, especially to the non-committee members who gave up their time to help out.
